A topless protestor from Ukraine’s Femen group brought down a big wooden Orthodox cross in central Kyiv with a chainsaw on Friday in support of Russian anti-Putin band Pussy Riot.
Femen’s Irina Shev-chenko, with words “Free Riot” painted across her bare breasts, started a chainsaw and deposed a big cross. The three members of the Pussy Riot who have been charged with hooliganism after performing a protest song at Moscow’s Christ the Savior Cathedral, back in February have caused quite a stir nationally and internationally.
Even celebrities have spoken out in support of the punk band. Madonna performed with the words “Pussy Riot” across her back and stated that if the band were found guilty and sentenced to jail, that would be a “tragedy”. Other celebrities that have voiced their support include Paul McCartney, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Franz Ferdinand. Dozens of protestors gathered outside Ukraine’s Russian embassy today to demonstrate against the prosecution of the feminist band.
At the same time a judge sentenced the Pussy Riot to two years in jail, they were found guilty of “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred”. Prosecutors had requested three year sentences. The two year sentences include the nearly six months served since the defendants were jailed following the February 21st protest.
