Topless feminists attempt to disrupt papal audience
CWN - January 14, 2013
From Our Store: Defining Issues (eBook)
A small group of Ukrainian feminists staged an odd demonstration in St. Peter’s Square on January 13, baring their breasts to draw attention to their disagreement with the Church’s stand on marriage.
Four members of a group called Femen attempted to disrupt a Sunday papal audience by stripping off their clothes, exposing slogans such as “In Gay We Trust” that were written across the backs and chests. The group said that the display was a protest against “homophobia.”
Femen has organized similar protests, using topless appearances to dramatize various political issues, in several European cities.
The 4 members of Femen who demonstrated at the papal audience were removed promptly by police. Although they succeeded in attracting media attention, it is not clear that Pope Benedict noticed their demonstration.
