The former boxer and Maidan activist, Vitali Klitschko, defeated the far-right Right Sector spokesman to be reelected as Mayor of Kyiv.
The runoff local elections for Ukraine’s capital delivered the incumbent, Vitali Klitschko, with a comfortable victory, that is, 66.5% of the vote. His opponent, the ultra-nationalist Bryslav Bereza, gathered 33,5%.
Klitschko was first elected in May 2014 as a prominent figure of the opposition against President Viktor Yanukovych. Not everyone welcomes his election. The activist group Femen accuse Klitschko of association with sex trafficking. On 15 November, an activist from the feminist protest group Femen bared her chest that was inscribed with the words “Stop Klitschko the Pimp.” Femen activists accuse Klitschko of being a lobbyist for the sex industry, trying to legalize prostitution.
Klitschko is currently an ally of the President and leader of the Ukrainian Democratic Alliance for Reform party that joined the Petro Poroshenko Bloc. During the Orange Revolution of 2004, he was an ally of Viktor Yushchenko.
