FEMEN activists to sue Ukrainian TV channel over ‘fake’ program

Members of the Ukrainian feminist group FEMEN, known for their topless stunts are to sue Channel 1+1 over a TV program about their organization. Activists say the whole story is a fake.

The program Groshi aired on Ukraine’s 1+1 Channel suggested the activists earn $1000 per month, that the FEMEN headquarters are in Paris, and that they are funded from abroad.

The program featured an investigative journalist who joined the ranks of FEMEN and claimed that “the bare breasts of the feminists cover up somebody’s money and political interests.”

The official website of the feminist movement rushed to deny what they dubbed “lies and slander.” The activists claim that all filming for the program was staged.

“FEMEN have never paid activists for their appearances in the actions,” a statement on the organization’s website says. “Secret penetration of a reporter into the organization is a fake; all the claims made by Groshi program about the movement are gross lies and slander.”

The organisation says four members of the movement do indeed get paid between $590 and $980, but they’ve never concealed this fact. They also say that the price the organization allegedly pays for rent of an office in Kyiv was doubled in the program.

“Thus all the information announced in the program aired on September 19, 2012 are either made up or consciously embellished,” the website says.

The FEMEN movement has been active in Ukraine and internationally since 2008. Its activists stage topless protests, including a recent "Strip it" protest against the Euro 2012 football championships, a topless protest in the Vatican’s St. Peter’s Square, and naked demonstrations for "freedom" in Ukraine.
