FEMEN activists who protested on Sophia Cathedral bell tower released

Kyiv, April 11, Interfax - The Kyiv police have made administrative protocols against the members of the feminist organization FEMEN, who conducted a topless protest on the bell tower of the Kyiv Sophia Cathedral, accusing them of hooliganism.

The four FEMEN activists were detained by police for protesting on the Sophia Cathedral bell tower on April 10, the press service for the Kyiv police told Interfax on Wednesday.

Administrative protocols were immediately made against the women, who were accused of petty hooliganism. The women were later released from custody.

According to earlier reports, five FEMEN activists conducted a rally protesting a bill proposing a ban on abortions in Ukraine on the bell tower of the Kyiv Sophia cathedral on April 10. The topless women rang the bells and put up a 7 meters long placard with the word STOP on a black background.

The bill banning abortion, which was proposed by Andrey Skil, a member of the Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc - Batkivshchina faction of the Ukrainian parliament, was registered with Verkhovnaya Rada at the request of the clergy of the Greek Catholic Church and the Vatican on March 12.
