Around 200 protestors had gathered outside the trial of Tunisian FEMEN protester Amina Tyler, accusing her of attacking the city of Kairouan and insulting Islam. The court has pressed new charges against the young woman, who gained notoriety for posting topless protest pictures online in March.

Convicted on Thursday of carrying an incendiary object apparently a can of pepper spray and fined 150 euros. She now faces another case on June 5.

“These things they are talking about, it’s a whole other matter. This case is not about public morals or an assault on the cemetery. That is another matter,” said her defence lawyer.

The judge has called for investigation into charges of indecency and desecration of the cemetery. She is suspected of spraying ‘FEMEN’ on a wall near the city’s main mosque. If found guilty she could face between six months and two years in prison.

Her father came to support his daughter saying he was proud that she was ‘defending her ideals’.

He kept her in hiding after she posted these photos online. Ukrainian feminist group FEMEN made such protests famous.

Members of the protest group were in Kairouan, chanting ‘Free Amina’. Three women, two French and one German, demonstrated topless outside the court where they were promptly arrested.

The trial is the latest flashpoint in Tunisia as tensions continue two years after the uprising which toppled President Ben Ali.
