After undergoing one of the worst atrocities anyone could imagine earlier this month, young, innocent Oksana Makar died. The Ukrainian girl passed away on Thursday due to injuries from her traumatic attack, according to BBC News. She had been invited to an apartment, raped by three men, and then strangled. She was then set on fire and left to die at an abandoned construction site. Her mother had posted a video of her in the hospital, which drove a lot of media and public attention to the case. There have been protests in several Ukrainian cities, with topless women's rights supporters furious over the attack and lack of punishment for the attackers. There has even been a call for a reinstatement of the death penalty.

What makes the rape and murder of this Ukrainian girl even more scandalous is who the attackers are. They are three young men, two of whom are sons of former government officials. One is the son of the regional administrator, another, the son of the regional prosecutor in the Mykolayiv area. The group Femen, which supports women's rights, has been staging topless protests in support of the 18-year-old, angry that the attackers were granted so much leniency, until now.

In a news conference on Thursday it was announced that all three attackers are looking at rape and murder charges. They could face life in jail. This wasn't always the case — the two sons of government officials were at first released without any charges. Despite the clear accusations and the state of Miss Makar, somehow there wasn't enough evidence? Whether it is about race, class, or power, when someone in an 'anointed' group is given leniency, it sends the message that committing even the worst crimes can go without punishment. This is not something that is unique to the Ukraine.

As long as there is public outcry, the attackers will probably face serious jail time. What did the teenage Ukrainian girl want as punishment? According to the Daily Mail, she would have preferred that their testicles were chopped off and fed to dogs. That is not a bad idea as a punishment for rapists. While she may not get what she asked for, it does look like some justice will be served thanks to the You Tube video and the supportive women in the Ukraine, who literally bared all for her.
