Femen members symbolically urinate on Ukraine leader’s photo in Paris

Topless women from the Femen feminist movement on Sunday symbolically urinated on photos of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych in Paris to condemn a crackdown on protesters angry about his rejection of a key EU deal. Five women from the group gathered in front of the Ukrainian embassy in the morning, bared their breasts and appeared to urinate on the photographs they placed on the sidewalk. But it was not clear if they were actually urinating or simply passing liquid contained in hidden pouches. The slogan "Yanukovych piss off!" was painted on their torsos. They then left and there >>>

Topless Woman Held in Lithuania for Protest Near EU Summit

VILNIUS, November 29 (RIA Novosti) – Lithuanian police detained a member of the Ukrainian feminist group Femen on Friday for a trademark topless protest against Kyiv’s decision not to sign a key deal with the European Union. The female protester stripped off outside the venue of the Eastern Partnership summit between EU countries and six former Soviet states that began in the small Baltic state of Lithuania on Thursday, a week after Ukraine made the surprise announcement that it would not sign long-planned association and free trade agreements at the summit. According to the Delfi news portal, >>>

Femen Topless Protesters Attack Berlin Brothel [PHOTOS]

Activists from radical feminist group Femen staged a topless protest outside one of Germany's biggest brothels, as part of a campaign promoting criminal punishment for prostitutes' clients. Five topless "sextremists" - as Femen calls its members - chained themselves to the entrance of the Artemis club or "wellness brothel" in Berlin. The women chanted "Go rape yourselves" and "Germany is not brothel" and briefly scuffled with the club staff and security before being led away by police. "Legalisation of prostitution didn't free women engaged >>>

The topless sextremist group Femen has gotten into a fracas with police in Berlin. The antipatriarchal group had gathered outside a brothel to demand that the German government criminalize prostitution. Femen was founded in Ukraine in 2008. Its female activists invariably remove their blouses in public to try to press their case against homophobia, organized religion, and the sex trade. It is also allegedly planning to hold a Christmas Eve protest in the Church of the Nativity garden in Bethlehem, according to gulfnews.com. Correspondent Nasouh Nazzai has reported that Femen will "delay announcing >>>

The Week in Books: Femen exposed, the £30000 ‘one-star’ Jeff Bezos book and …

What is certain is that Polity press, its English language publisher, is updating the story of the four female founders to answer the question that has been asked ever since the film, Ukraine Is Not a Brothel, screened at the Venice Film Festival this autumn. It made the claim that the real brains behind the often topless protest group was a feisty man, and not a feisty often topless woman. The book, a history of the movement, a manifesto and an autobiography in one, is due out in May 2014 and I’m told that Polity has approached Femen for an update over the controversy of their “male leader”, >>>

Unauthorized FEMEN Calendar Combines Art History and Topless Protest

The Ukraine-founded, Paris-based feminist activist collective FEMEN, known for staging topless protests wherever women’s rights are being threatened, might want to stage a protest over this one: Without the group’s permission, newly founded French publisher Le Contrepoint has created a 2014 wall calendar combining Agence France Presse photographs of FEMEN protesters and famous works from art history. Each month’s pairing comes with explanatory text by Julien Blanpied, assistant curator at the Musée d’Art Contemporain du Val-de-Marne, noting the similarities between the seminal artworks >>>
