How revolutionary is going nude?

The use of nudity has been a key symbol of Ukraine's FEMEN protests for women's liberation. In light of the ongoing controversy surrounding the Ukrainian women’s rights group FEMEN and their nude protests across Europe aiming to counter the anti-women’s rights positions in the Arab world, Muslim women have lashed out, saying that taking off their clothes “does not liberate me.” There seems to be a chasm between those who support FEMEN action and those who disagree with the use of nudity >>>

Femen’s "topless jihad" in support of Amina Tyler (warning: nudity)

There were topless protests today (April 5) in Europe and North America as part of what the Ukraine-based feminist group Femen is calling a “topless jihad”. The feminist group, which describes itself as “sextremists”, routinely stages disruptive actions in protest of a variety of government policies and social problems they deem sexist or against the interests of women. Today’s topless demonstrations were held in support of a 19-year-old Tunisian woman named Amina Tyler. Tyler attracted controversy and international attention earlier this year when she posted partially nude photos of >>>

FEMEN took over feminism

According to Google Trends, searches for "femen" have passed over those for "feminism". Number of searches for FEMEN actually caught up already in 2012, but now in earlier 2013 we could confirm that the trend sustained and brave women of Ukraine took over the feminists. Unfortunately and ironically, searches for "women's right" never took off. Feminism was long in decline, during the last 10 years in particular. Economic turmoils drew activists' attention to more pressing matters. With recent surge of FEMEN actions one can also notice the revival of feminism as the trend illustrates. The >>>

A gloriously crude topless ‘jihad’ from a Femen activist

She's topless. She's angry. And she is, literally, taking liberties. The activist in this picture took part in a protest in Paris in support of Amina Tyler, a young Tunisian woman who has been targeted by Islamists after she put a bare-breasted picture of herself on her Facebook page in March with the words "Fuck Your Morals" and "My Body Belongs To Me, And Is Not The Source Of Anyone's Honour" painted across her chest. Both Tyler and this activist are members of Femen, the radical feminist group that originated in the Ukraine and specialises in topless politics. A group of Muslim women has launched an online campaign in response to demonstrations by bare-breasted activists staged in front of mosques and Tunisian embassies across Europe. The "Muslimah Pride Day" was organised in response to the Ukrainian women's rights group Femen's self-declared "Topless Jihad Day", a day of topless protests around the world to support Tunisian activist Amina Tyler. Organiser Sofia Ahmed, writing on Facebook, said: "Muslimah [Female Muslim] pride is about connecting with your Muslim identity and reclaiming our collective voice. Let's show the world that >>>

The inconsistency of Femen’s imperialist "one size fits all" attitude

There was a time in 2011, when you couldn’t walk in central London without bumping into sluts. I am of course, referring to the Slutwalk march that took place in the capital that June.  Following the example of Canadian women – who in turn were sparked by the throwaway comment of a policeman who advised women to “avoid dressing like sluts” to remain safe from rape – women took to the streets to protest rape culture and slut-shaming. I heartily approved, even as I sat it out. Slutwalk, with a message of genuine goodness and worth >>>
