FEMEN Protests Hockey World Cup In Belarus

When the International Ice Hockey Federation chose Belarus to host the 2014 Hockey World Cup, it may not have expected to attract the ire of a legion of topless Ukrainian feminists. The organization's decision to allow Belarus' capital city Minsk to host the games despite the country's poor human rights record prompted criticism from European politicians, but drew little international attention. That's where FEMEN, a radical group formed in 2008, stepped up to the plate. According to Russia Today, FEMEN demonstrated topless in the freezing cold near the IIHF's main office in Zurich, Switzerland. "Topless >>>

Photo: Topless Women from Femen Protest 2014 IIHF Championships

Topless women took to the streets recently to protest the 2014 IIHF Championships being held in Belarus. Or at least I think that's what they were protesting. It was sort of hard to pay attention. No, yeah, that's definitely what they were protesting. Because Belarus does not uphold democracy and human rights, Ukrainian feminist group Femen decided to stage a topless hockey game near IIHF headquarters to ensure that their objections to the nation were heard. And also, apparently, to reward the folks who picked that as the spot for the championships. As per the Russian Times (via Yahoo! Sports): The >>>

Topless players challenge Lukashenko on Swiss ice

The Ukrainian feminist group Femen have organized a topless hockey game near IIHF headquarters in Switzerland to protest at a decision to hold the 2014 World Championship in Belarus which they say does not uphold democracy and human rights. The protest took place near the main office of the International Ice Hockey Federation in Zurich. Braving a severe frost, the protesters started a hockey game in the street wearing unbuttoned coats with nothing on underneath. Their demands, spelt out on banners, read: “Do not encourage dictatorship!” “Lukashenko, let’s play in Hague!” and “Slaves >>>

Topless Protest During Political Summit in Davos: Feminists Explain Their …

Like us on Facebook "We are coming there to scream, using women's voices, women's bodies to explain that women need to decide also," she said. Their unclad torso was painted with messages like "Poor, because of you," "Crisis! Made in Davos" and "Gangsters party in Davos." However, they were not allowed to demonstrate further. Also, about 40 Occupy movement protestors marched in front the town hall with banners and placards with slogans like "If voting would change anything, it would be illegal" and "Don't let them decide for you, Occupy WEF," and chanted anti-capitalist >>>

Wednesday, February 1, FEMEN girls held another protest against the Belarusian authorities. This time the activists came to the building of the International Ice Hockey Federation in Zurich. They were holding posters reading "Slave can’t play hockey," "Do not encourage dictatorship," "Lukashenko, let’s play at the Hague," "Withdraw championship from dictatorship!" encouraging the federation management not to hold the world championship in 2014 in Minsk. FEMEN activists find unacceptable the position of Hockey Federation, which "supports and enables such a dictatorial country as Belarus >>>

Young Women Go Topless Protesting Sex Trade, Claim Torture by KGB – Salem

Feb-01-2012 03:10 Salem-News.com "This is the only way to be heard in this country. If we staged simple protests with banners, then our claims would not have been noticed" - FEMEN (SALEM) - I just heard about the groups of topless women in the Ukraine, part of The Femen Movement, who are taking a stand by taking their shirts off in public protest at events that quite naturally, have garnered their share of attention. The idea was presented to me as something slightly humorous and very entertaining, and yet that is not the case at >>>

The naked protester (or, how to get the media to pay attention to women)

Nudity as a form of protest wasn't invented by PETA. Events such as the World Naked Bike Ride uses nudity as a way to protest "oil dependency and to celebrate the power and individuality of [their] bodies," 600 environmental activists went naked in 2007 to protest global warming and even as far back as the early 1900s, the Doukhobors, a Russian pacifist religious sect, held nude protest parades. So I wouldn't go so far as to say that nudity was useless as a tactic in social movements. Lately the Ukrainian protest group, Femen, has been getting a lot of attention. Why? >>>
